TOEFL New Developments 2024

15 May 2024: TOEFL test has a new format that might slightly make things a little less complicated for students hailing from India. A makeover has been given to the Reading section. Now instead of 3-4 passages earlier, there are only 2 passages along with 10 questions each, meaning less reading and subsequently, more time to answer the questions. Now, you will spend only 35 minutes on the Reading section instead of the previously long 54-72 minutes. Great is that! Remember, the TOEFL is your test on English skills, confirming that you are ready to enter a foreign country to study. But with this new version of the Reading section, you can use your studying time for a smaller amount of material.

What is the TOEFL Exam?

The TOEFL iBT is aimed for students who intend to study abroad. The test measures abilities to use all four language skills-reader, listener, speaker, and writer-for success in the classroom. This way, universities in English-speaking countries like the US, UK, Canada, or Australia can be assured that students will be able to follow lectures, participate in discussions in class, understand their textbooks, and write assignments appropriately. Unlock a wider range of educational opportunities by proving your English skills through the TOEFL exam.

The TOEFL test assesses all the important English skills you can ever need within an academic context: reading and listening comprehension, spoken English, and writing skills. You will be given the challenge of reading complicated passages culled from textbooks and journals, listen attentively to lectures and class discussions, clearly express thoughts in spoken English, and write provocative essays that prove your analytical and writing capacities. These scores will qualify you for scholarships while going abroad and can even increase the chances of a visa for overseas jobs. The test is usually computer-based and costs ₹ 16,900 for Indian students.

What is the Full Form of TOEFL

The TOEFL stands for Test of English as a Foreign Language. It’s a standardized test that assesses the English proficiency of non-native speakers, especially those intending to study at foreign universities where English is predominantly used as the language of instruction. The TOEFL measures your skills in four primary fields: reading, listening, speaking, and writing.

Why Take TOEFL in 2024?

Well, most universities ask you to submit your TOEFL scores and there are many reasons behind it. The absolute reasons why you should take TOEFL in 2024 are:

  • Unlock Study Abroad Dreams: The TOEFL is your gateway to universities in English-speaking countries like the USA, UK, Canada, and Australia. Scoring well proves you can handle academic English in lectures, discussions, and assignments.
  • Mastery of All Skills: The TOEFL tests all the key areas: reading, listening, speaking, and writing. An all-rounded assessment will help improve your overall English skills.
  • Scholarship and Visa Advantage: A better TOEFL result will make you qualified for scholarships and strengthen the visa applications for studying or working abroad.
  • Focus on the New Reading Section: You will then have fewer reading and answering passages from May 2024. Now, you’ll have only two passages instead of three and you will face 10 questions on each passage, so you can spend more time in other sections .
  • Extensively Available and Recognized: The updated version of TOEFL iBT is the regular format of test, and it’s acceptable by over 11,000 universities.

Types of TOEFL Exam

There used to be two types of the TOEFL test-the traditional version or PBT and the newer iBT. For many students, however, the Internet-Based Test is now the more popular format. Though the PBT is still delivered in some locations across the globe, internet access increases more by the day, and it’s not used as much these days. The iBT is the preferred format, however. It has several advantages over the PBT. For example, the iBT test may have tougher listening and speaking exercises, such as listening to lectures or conversations and responding accordingly. Furthermore, test centers may give more testing dates during the year, giving it more flexibility in terms of scheduling dates. Lastly, the result of the iBT test is often faster compared to the PBT test in most cases.

What is TOEFL iBT?

The most common version of the TOEFL exam is delivered for very good reasons! You will be able to take your test on a computer in a test centre, where all of the four key English skills will be assessed within a simulated university environment. Reading passages are presented similar to those found in textbooks or academic journals. The listening section will involve listening to lectures, conversations, and talks on various subjects, exactly as in a university class. In speaking, your own ability to express yourself clearly and coherently about academic matters will be put under test-for instance, in answering a question raised about a reading passage or in stating your views on some topic. The writing test is to check your paper-based essay writing skills for coherent and well-structured essays and also to analyze information or express your views about a specific topic. It’s a Holistic test to show the universities all over the world how fluent you can be with English use for academic purposes, which is imperative if you would like to make good grades in universities where it’s the main used language for teaching.

What is the TOEFL Test on Paper?

This is the older version of the TOEFL and is becoming less common since more and more locations around the world continue gaining access to reliable internet. The TOEFL PBT is a paper-and-pencil test taken in a testing center. While it covers the same four skills of English – reading, listening, speaking, and writing – it is structured and worded differently from the TOEFL iBT. In reading PBT, for instance, you will have to read passages on paper while you answer the multiple-choice questions on paper as well. For the listening section, you will listen to cassettes and answer more multiple-choice questions on paper. The speaking section of PBT is much the same as the previous ones.

You will answer questions on your microphone, and your answers will be recorded on cassettes. These recordings are sent on to ETS raters who will grade your speaking proficiency. Lastly, the writing section of the PBT requires you to hand-write your essays on lined paper. While the TOEFL PBT is still accepted by some colleges, for most schools, the TOEFL iBT is the preferred version. The iBT provides a more modern test-taking experience that can be said to somewhat reflect the application of the English language in an academic setting in the present times. Besides, results for iBT tests are usually released faster compared to that of PBT.

TOEFL Eligibility 2024

Any age is accepted for the TOEFL in 2024; there is no minimum education requirement, to be honest. But if you are going abroad for studies at an English-speaking college, then it’s just for you. In fact, universities like that expect you to have completed high school, or in other words, finished 10+2 here in India. So focus on strengthening your English skills-in reading, listening, speaking, and writing-and show universities just how great your score will look on your TOEFL!

Age Limit: The best part is that there is no fixed upper age limit for this TOEFL exam! One can register for the test, but there is a specific requirement depending on the age. Those test takers who are below 18 years of age have to register in the test by a parent or a guardian as these students have to carry permission from either one of their parents or guardians on the importance of this exam and approve them to take it.

Academic Qualification: There is no specific educational background required to take the TOEFL. However, do remember that the test is meant to measure your skills for an academic setting abroad. Ideally, you must have completed 10+2 education from a recognized board in India. This is because most of the universities you will be applying to would look for such qualification.

In this regard, while any student may take the TOEFL test, it is most relevant to students who plan to pursue higher education in foreign countries after completing their high school education in India.

Please check the website below for available test dates.

Good news! The TOEFL iBT is administered in 39 cities across the country, which makes it easier to facilitate the whole process for test-takers. • Ahmedabad

The official ETS website has a search function to help you locate centers near you. And if taking the test from home is more convenient, you can always consider the TOEFL Home Edition.

TOEFL Exam Pattern 2024

It tests your English language proficiency in an academic set-up so that universities can know if you would really thrive in their classrooms. Here’s how the TOEFL exam pattern runs in 2024.

The four core sections of the TOEFL test every key skill of the English language:

Reading (Approx. 60 minutes): This section puts you through multiple choice based on 2-4 academic passages. So, get ready to break down and understand heavy-duty texts. (Until May 15, 2024, you’ll have fewer passages and only 10 questions each, so you’ll have a little more space to breathe.)

Listening (about 60 minutes): Get those ears in shape! You will hear lectures, classroom discussion, and conversations. Then, there will be multiple-choice questions to assess your listening skills.

Speaking (about 20 minutes): Time to speak your mind! This section gives you practice in using your spoken English for these four tasks. You will now have the chance to respond to a question on a topic familiar to you, read and listen to prompts to produce speech, and answer open-ended questions.

Writing (about 50 minutes): There are two integrated tasks, which also represent two write-ups: reading and listening passages to be summarised, and an independent writing task on an opinion or explanation of a concept.

Scoring System: Each section is scored between 0 and 30, putting the total score between 0 and 120. Most universities have minimum TOEFL scores required; be sure to check what your target schools expect.

TOEFL Cut-Off 2024

Even though some tests have a cut score that you must pass, the TOEFL doesn’t. Instead, universities set their own minimum TOEFL score requirements for admission. Meaning, there is no universal cutoff for 2024 in the TOEFL. Requirements can vary from university to university and program to program. Scores in the 100-110 range are often needed at the top universities, whereas others may settle for scores in the 80-90 range. The best way to find out is to check the specific requirements listed on the program’s webpage of the university in question. There will be little change over time in such requirements, so it does not hurt anyone to check the university website prior to submitting an application for any potential changes.
